ENTERTAINMENTS, ETC.

The weekly meeting of the St. Peter's j Club took the form 'last night of a lee- ! ture illustrated by lantern slides of Arctic and Sub-Arctic Canada by Dr. J. M'lntosh Bell, Government Geologist. Dr. Bell, who for the past 'seven years has been engaged in exploring this practically unknown territory, gave a very interesting and instructive account of an expedition- <~hp: took to -Great Bear Lake, -covering a distance of three ' thousand miles, accompanied by an Englishman and thrge Indians. The journey was relieved with several exciting experiences with the Indians, who at times threatened to exterminate the explorens altogether. At one' period, when 1 entering the Esquimo Land the Indian who carried all the food and ammunition deserted, pretending that he yfaa staying behind merely to lay out some meat to diy, . but Dr. Bell found out later that the . real reason was his great fear of the Esquimos. However, 'the Esquimo proved to be more friendly t disposed towards the Englishmen " than to the Indians, and they were thus enabled to get more food. ' Slides of individual types 'of Indians and Esquimos were also given. There were about three hundred people in the hall, and signs of appreciation were very hearty. An interesting lecture on ""Wordsworth" was delivered by Mrs. W. A. Evans, M.A., under the auspices of the Corrrtenay-place Congregational Social Institute last night. Throughout the lecture Mrs. Evans dealt with her subject in a manner which showed how thorough- 1 ly- conversant she was with the beauty of thought and expression of the' "Lake Poet," and she was followed with close" attention .and evident interest by a thoroughly* appreciative and fairly numerous audience. At the close of the lecthire a hearty vote of- thanks was accorded Mrs. Evans. Ah tie Home for Aged Needy last evening Mrs. Hill gave her annual entertainment. The programme included itlems by the" following: — Misses Sewell, Copeland, Pollock, and Messrs. Sewell (instrumental), Messrs. Hodge, Gray t Pickles, and Miss Carver (vocal), and recitations jb'y Miss Hankins. After the concert sup*per was supplied by the hostess.
