AUCTION SALE TO-NIGHT^ This evening, at their rooms, Mannersstreet, commencing at 7.30, Messrs. Sidev Meech and Co. wUI hold an extdmuvo sale ol city and suburban property; when 21 houses and 22 sections will be, offered for public auction. The auctioneers etcte that the reserves are low; also that tho terms for tho purchase of the majority of them are very easy, only 10 per cent, being required. Darbyshire, secretary of the Colonial Mutual Life Society for New Zealand, resident in Wellington, who, for the past ten years has been a Justice of the Peace for Queensland, has been advised that he has, in consequence of his removal from that State io New Zealand, been appointed a Justice of the Peace for Queensland resident in this colony. Entries for the chow of the Wellington Poultry, Pigeon, and Canary Society, which opens ai His Majesty's Theatre, Courtenay-place, on Thubday of next week, have closed with the fine total of 1230. This means an increase of nearly 100 over last year's figures, and constitutes a record for the society. Birds are being sent from all parts of New Zealand, and New South Waks will be 6trongly represented in both tho poultry and pigeon sections. In our advertising columns will be found tho prospectus of the Taranaki Petroleum Company, Ltd., together with the reports by the oil expert, Mr. G. C. Fair, and Professor Easterfield, of the Victoria- College. The company is bsing gromoted to take over the assets of the Loturoa Petroleum Company, which consists of the boring plant, the oil well and freehold and boring rights over about 6000 acres of land in the Taranaki district. The difficulty hitherto met with in oil boring in Taranaki has been coped with by Mr. Fair, the manager of the company, to the extent of sinking a bore to a depth of "2331 ft, particulars of the now from whioh have been published. The oil, as is shown by Professor. Eastorfields report, is of speoial quality and rich in by-products. It is proposed to put down four more bores, the first of which hi),~- already been started, and tho manager, Mr. Fair, states that he anticipates that ho will bo iin the oil-boarine country inside of six months. He further atatos that in his opinion there is absolutely no doubt that the oil will bo struck at about 50ft lees tuan that in tho JNo. 1 bore, which is known as tho " Birthday. The brokers inform us that already moro than half tho shares allotted for Wellington havo been taken up. Tho Wellington brokers of tho company are Messrs. Barr, Loary, and Co., East and East, and J.
