— r-rr — Mr. J. Heaton Barker, of Wellington, left for Sydney, en route for Melbourne, by the Warrimoo, on Saturday. Mr. C. H. FrayUng", who is to take up the position of principal of the Jubilee Institute 'for the "Blind at Auckland, arrived- from London^ to-day by the Athenic. He is accompanied by Mrs. Frayling. Miss Maxwell-Hibberd, danghter of the Postmaster-General of Natal, arrived from London to-day by the Athenic. The young lady is booked for ! Auckland, where she is to be married I to Dr. Hoberts-on 1 ; F.R.C.S,E. -Hn G. H. Barnes, business manager of. Messrs. Meynell and Grain's "Fatal Wedding" Company, arrived in- Wellington on Saturday evening. Mr. Barnes is accompanied by Mrs: Barnes throughout the present tour. They are staying at tho Empire Hotel. Miss Annie WMtelaw, M.A., formerly of Auckland, has been appointed head mistress of the- projected Girls' High School in the northern city. Miss Whitelaw graduated at Girton College, add held important educational positions in 'England. Mr. Maurice Cohen, who has been ordered! abroad for the benefit of bis health, was a passenger for Sydney by the_ Warrimoo on Saturday. He will visit the Far 'East, and then go on to Europe, returning to the colony by way of Canada and America. Last evening the president of the Central Mission (Mr. W. J. Gray) bade farewell to the members of that body, having recently received notification from his company that he had been transferred to headquarters in Melbourne. He spoke of the pleasant time he had spent in the Mission, and hoped that it would grow in numbers and spirituality, and prove a great blessing to thfe community at large. Mr 1 . T. J&. Saywell, public Trustee's agent at Grfeymou^h, has been promoted to the charge of the branch of tne Public Trust Office juat opened at Wanganui. He has been succeeded at Greymouth by Mr. J. Ev Allen, until recently chief clerk in the Dunedin office, whose place there^ has been taken by Mr. K. H. N. Browne, for some time past cashier at the head office in Wellington. An old Wellington resident passed peacefully away this morning in the person of Mrs. S^irah Barnard, relict of the late William Hooper Barnard, of H.M. Customs. The deceased lady, with her hnsband, arrived in Port Nicholson on Ist February, 1857, in thfe ship Indian Queen, and with the 'exception of a few years spent in Carterton, has resided in Wellington ever since. She leaves a family of four sons — Messrs. Fred and Herrtv Barnard, of Eltham, George Barnard, of Wellington, and Chajles L. Barnard of Foxton — and three daughters — Mis. D. BiHman, of Wellington, Mrs. A Clark, of Lawrence, and Sirs. Brigadier Fisbfcr, of Melbourne. Included in her descendants are eight grand children and four great-grandchildren. Dr. H. J. Tizard, the recently-ap-pointed assistant medical officer f or_ the mental hospitals of the colony, arrived from London to-day by tho Athenic. Prior to his present appointment Dr. Tizard held the position of third assistant medical officer at the Colney Hatch Asylum, and ho was selected from twenty applicants for the position in this colony. The twenty were eventually narrowed down to .five by two mental specialists, and these five were interviewed by tho High .Commissioner, with the above result. Dr. Tizard is a young man only thirty-six years of age, and is unmarried. He joined the Colney Hatch hospital in 1898 in the capacity of sixth assistant medical officer, and gradually rose to third assistant, which position ho has held since February. 1901.
