Mr. X. M'Robie, Ute ot Wellington, and now part-proprietor of the Pabutua Herald, ha* been Dominated by the Pahiai.ua School Committee as a candidate for one of the three north country seat") on the Wellington Education Board. A fireman named Charles Reid, belonging to the steamer Indraghiri, who pleaded guilty before Dr. A. M'Arthur, S.M.. to-day to having assaulted John M'Naught, chief engineer of the vessel. His Worship said there was a difficulty in dealing with this class of case. The offence with which the defendant was charged was a serious one, and if committed by a man ashore would probably carry a sentence of two months' imprisonment. If «eamen who struck officers were sent to gaol it might lead to their being encouraged to commit these offences in order to get their pay and leave the vessel. The Indraghiri was leaving the colony in a few dayft and if the defendant was sent td gaol he would probably be foisted on us. His Worship subsequently decided to give the defendant one month's imprisonment, staling to the officer, "You have got rid of him, but he has got the better of us."
