At the quarterly sitting of the Auckland Licensing Committee this morning Mr. Rosser remarked that there were fifty-eight hotels in the district, and very Kttls fault to find. He had just returned from a trip to the South, and he considered that the Auckland hotels compared Very favourably with those elsewhere. Mr. Aickin : The hotels are a credit to the city and police. Logan, of Napier; and Mr. N. A. Nathan, of Auckland. Mr. A.. R. Pilkington, a member of a big English glass manufacturing firm, arrived from London by the lonic on a tour of New Zealand. Mr. R. W. Southern, who intends touring the colony, was also a passenger by the vessel. The Shaw-Savill steamer lonic, which arrived from London to-day, brought a total of 553 passengers for Now Zealand ports, made up as /follows: — Fist saloon 59, second saloon 57, third-class 437. This with the total crew of 163 makes a number of 716 souls «on board. The last meeting of the Executive of the Wellington and Wairarapa United Charitable Aid Board was recently held at the Secretary's office, Featherston-street. Mr. J. J. Devine, Chairman of the Board, presided. After accounts were passed and correspondence dealt with, the Chairman thanked the Executive for their attendance at the monthly meetings throughout the year and the attention given to the business. He referred to the conference of local bodies held some time ago at Masterton with the view of taking action to sever the Wairarapa from Wellington, and stated that the views of many members of that conference and the figures given were very misleading. He stated that the Wairarapa had been well treated by the Board, and instanced the recent grant to erect a benevolent home in Masterton on the land donated by Mr. Renall. A vote of thanks to the Chairman for the very great interest he had exhibited in the affairs of the Board during the many years he had been Chairman concluded the business. The new representatives of the local bodies on the Board meet this week to elect a Chairman. Messrs. Sidey, Meech and Co. advertise that they will continue the sale of Mrs. Whitwell's stock and fittings on the premises, Cuba-street, at 11 a.m. sharp. They also advertise that they will sell the whole of Johnstone's bankrupt stock on the premises, Manners-street, on Friday, commencing at 1.30.
