ONSLOW BOROUGH COUNCIL,

<xThe ordinary monthly meeting of the Onslow Borough Council was held on Saturday evening. Present— The Mayor (Mr. It. B. Williams), and Councillors Nash, Larkin, Holdsworth, Aplin, Rounthwaite, Kavanagh, Kiernan, Neely, and Lynneburgh. Before the minutes were passed Councillor Rounthwaite moved that a resolution passed at last meeting—that a borough engineer be appointed— be rescinded. He was proceeding to give his views on what sort of a man a borough engineer should be, when the Mayor ruled that the motion could not be put without notice. The questions between the Council nn3 Mrs. Rhodes being still before a Parliamentary Committee, it was decided that plans of Highland Park and lowering of Pitt-street be further adjourned. The Council wants Mrs. Rhodes to cut back her holly hedge, the projection of which is obstructing pedestrians. It was stated that Mrs. Rhodes had promised to do so in a more suitable season, as to do so now would be to kill the hedge. It was resolved to notify owners of all unfenced land that they must fence Mr. Richmond is to afford Mr. Mestayer any available information the latter may require in order to frame his drainago report. Mr. Richmond reported on lot 9, at the corner of Elizabeth-street and the main Wadestown-road, owned by Mr. Janes. It is proposed to acquire tho land in order to straighten the line. The Council decided to ask Mr. Janes his price, and to get an estimate from an indeperfdent valuer. The Council has entered into an agreement for present use and future purchase of a quarry site at Cecil-road, Wndestown, on the following terms : £20 paid down, balance of purchase money (£200) to remain at 5 per cent, interest till paid.. Tho Council does not hold the title deeds of the land; and the Controller and Auditor-General wrote asking under what statutory authority the Council entered into this transaction. The Mayor considered that tha agreement came within sub-section 3 of section 203 of the Municipal Corporations Act, 1900, and it was decided to reply to the Controller and Auditor-General to this effect. In connection with Wilton Estate, Wadestown, Mr. J. A. Bruce asked that roads through Young's and Halswell'a be taken over. Tho Borough Engineer (Mr. R. R. Richmond) reported ' that fencing 6till required to be done. It was decided not to take over tho roads till the work is completed. Messrs. Esson and Drake forwarded £12 10s for work on Trelissick Estato roads preparatory to the Council taking them over. The matter of acceptance or non-acceptance stands over. A permit was granted for extension of the Wadestown Presbyterian Church ; the Council could not eeo that it had any statutory power to remit the permit fee.
