THE NATIVES OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA.
Captain Hare, Commissioner of Police, has reported to the Colonial Secretary with regard to his recent extended trip to the north-west. The report contains a general denial of the charges made by Dr. Roth against the police and pearlers in connection with, the treatment of aboriginals. Regarding the proposed establishment of reserves for natives, Captain Hare states: —"l fail to see where any benefit will accrue from establishing reserves for 'natives. Anyone with erperience on the subject will readily see it will be impossible, owing to the numerous tribes in this State, to keep the aboriginals in any fixed locality. But yet, if it were considered advisable to make the exptriment, I recommertd that a reserve be made in the Kimberley district, where, so I am informed, there are four tribes ; and the country being of great extent, an endeavour might be made with the view of ascertaining whether. the results would be favourable." The report concludes : — "The State of" Western Australia has been mufigned, and . a fitigma has been placed upon the inhabitants. As a resident of the State for thirty-five years, as a. peailer, and for some years a pioneer settler in the back country, having every opportunity of. seeing how the natives were treated, and as an ollicial w.ho held important pobitions from Wyndhiim to Albany, and Commissioner of Police for the past five years, I am, I confidently asset t, in as good a position to know the treatment accorded to the natives as anyone in this State, and in a better position than anyone outside it. Therefore I feel it to be my duty to forward you this report for your consideration."
