■FORTNIGHTLY MEETING.

The fortnightly meeting of the City Council, adjourned from last Thursday evening owing to the death of Councillor Wiltshire, was held yesterday afternoon, beginning at 4 o'clock. The 'Mayor (Hon. T. W. Hislop) presided, and Councillor Izard, who was indisposed, was the only member absent.

FINANCE COMMITTEE,

Tho following report of the Finance Committee was adopted : — That the approval of the Council bo given to a right-of-way off Mercer-strset applied for by Messrs. Brandon, HLslop, and Jdhnston, upon the conditions laid down in the City Engineer's report ; that Mts. H. •Blundell be granted a refund of £6 12s, being amount overpaid on account of ■rates on her property at Clifton-terrace ; that the Wellington Building and Investment Company be informed, in- reply to their application to uplift certain sinking fund securities, that the Council will be prepared to take the whole of its deposit back with interest to date of repayment, and please the whole of the securities; that ''n future all sinking funds be invested upon freehold and mortgage securities at current 'ates of interest; that .the application of Mrs. N. M'Leod for compassionate allowance be left in the hands of the Town Clerk with power to act.

PUBLIC WORKS 4 COMMITTEE.

On the- recommendation. o£ the Public Works Committee the following were among the recommendations approved :—: — That the application of Messrs. T. Ballinger and Co. for a 6in connection from the waiter main in Panama-street, for the supply of water for -a patent sprinkler and fir© talarm at the new premises of the D.I.C. be granted, on condition that an approved sluice valve be- fixed on ths footway whsre directed, and that an overflow pipe from the tanks be made to discharge in such position as may be approved by the City Engineer; that the application of Mr. W. R. Nimmo for permission to erect a verandah to building at the corner of Lambton-quay and Bowen-street be- acceded to; that the application of ■Mr. W. 'C. Chatfield to -construct a cellar at 'Messrs. P. Bayman and Co.'c premises, Victoria-strest, bo granted on the usual conditions ; that the application of Mr. R. S. Rounthwaits for approval to a plan showing proposed extension of 4in main round Wellington College, ■principally for fire-extinction purposes, be agreed to, provided the main ■be laid by .the Corporation at the co^-t of the collsgo authorities, the conditions specified by the City Engineer, to be carried out; that Mr. G. GUlow be asked if 'his previous offeT is still open to contribute tho sum of £100 and dedicate a strip Bft 3in in width, on condition that the Corporation construct a portion of .the north end of Owen-street, in accordance with .tho City Engineer's report; that consideration of a petition from J. Odlin and others, foT repairs to streets at Island Bay, bo postponed until the construction of the tramway to that district is -completed ; t/ha-t consideration of th© application of Mr. ft. R. Richmond for subdivision of property at Miramat be- postponed until proper plans are prepared; that Aorangi-terrace be now taken over by .the Corporation, the street been completed to the satisfaction of the City Engineer, provided, however, that the plantation be not used as a fowlrun ; that the application of the Rev. Mi-. vValker that the oehoolroom at Palm-grove be drained under the def-3Tr-ed-payment system be not acceded .to ; that the letter from the Public Health .Department, with reference to plumbing -work in the M-slrose Wai-d, be referred to the Bylaws Committee for consideration.

SUNDRY MATTERS. Tha Bylaws, Fire Brigade, and Lighting Committee -recommended, and it was resolved :— That the lamp at the corneT of Shannon and Mersey etrosta, Island Bay, be moved as suggested by Mr. W. C. Chalfield, piovided that gentleman pays all costs of removal ;'that a public^ hall lioenso bo granted to St. John'a Church, all alterations required having been carried out. ; Councillor TrevoT brought up a grievance of a number of the Corporation's labourere, who .thought they were compelled unneceesarily to attend at the Corporation yards foT the payment^ of thoir wages. Sometimes two hours' time was lost in going from their pkee of working to the yards. Tho Mayor, in reply, 6aid there was no doubt some inconvenience was caused, and an effort would be anadc 'to overcome the trouble.
