Sir Walter Buller's Supplement to tho " Birds of New Zealand " makes good progress The only portion yet issued is the introduction, extending to fifty pages and containing a number of beautiful illustrations. 1 have bcps a letter from Sir Joseph Hooker, the eminent scientist, in whicli Ke cays that he haa read this with "deep interest and admiration," adding tmu "it is full of curious facts and sound reasoning, and the style is 60 good that one's mind runs as one reads." Volume 1 has been printed off, but it will not .b© issued for about ten days, owing to the unavoidable delay in getting the hand-coloured plates delivered in time. Subscribers' names are, I hear, coming in from all parts "6f the Kingdom, as well as from abroad, and as bhe edition is a comparatively small one, th© list will in all probability be rapidly filled. j The two famous athletes, Alfred Shrubb and A. F. Duffey, who have only recently returned to the Mother Country from Australia and New Zealand, were running at the Wolverhampton' Charity Sports last Saturday. Alfred Shrubb lost no time in showing that his long tour abroad has had no deleterious effect on his wonderful running powers. At the Wolverhamptou sports he took part in a three miles scratch event, and won in 15min 11 3-ssec. He gave a splendid display, and so completely did he outclass his opponents that he finished a lap and s hau ahead of his nearest opponent — G. Wigginron-~-and, moreover, was comparatively fresh at the end of his long run. Duffey, on the other hand, was unfortunate, for while running in the 100 yds scratch race, and when he was leading . fifteen yards from the tape, he was seized with a spasm, which caused him to collapse, and which prevented him competing in the handicap. With reference to the interview between the Anglican Primate of New.Zealand and Genera) Booth, in which Bishop Nevill suggested the basis of alliance between the Salvation Army aad the Church of England, the Pall Mall Gazette bays: "Cardinal Manning had an idea of affiliating in fcome way the Salvation Army to tho Roman Catholic Church, and had moie than one discussion with General Booth on the question, but apparently there were no definite results," and it adds that General Booth's answer to the New Zealand Primate is probably a repetition of what ho formerly told Cardinal Manning. It is stated that the complete list of entries for Henley Regatta, which will be held next week, is a record in point of numbers. There are altogether 57 entries, compared with 44 last year. So numerous, indeed, are the entries for the Diamond Challenge Sculls and tho Thames Challenge Cup that it has been found necessary to decide sonic of the preliminary heats on 3rd July. Among tha eleven competitors for the Thames Challengo Cup will be the Royal School of Mines Boat Club, in Avhicli the younger son of Mr. and Mrs. George Hutchison will be one of the oarsmen. There are fifteen competitors for the Diamond Challenge Sculls, one of whom is Mr. G. G. Russell, of New Zealand and King's College, Cambridge, Numerous callers have again during the past week left their names at the New Zealand Agency-General, and among them are the following : — Mr. R.
