At Lord's to-day .tho Australians began a match against Middlesex. The weather was fine at the opening, and tho wicket fast. There was a fairly largo attendance of the public. Following are the .teams :—: — Australia. — Hill, Darling, Trumper, Armstrong, Layer, Cotter, M'Leod, Hopkins, Noble, Duff, and Kelly. 'Middlesex. — M'Gregor, Bosanquet, Warner, Wills, J. Douglas, Stodgon, E. Beldam, G. Beldam, Hearne, Trott, and Tarrant. Darling won .tho toes and elected to bat, though the opening was none too reassuring, as Trumper was caught in. the slips from the first- ball by Trott, and the same fieldsman disposed of Hopkins off his fourth ball. Hill, after scoring 4, was clean bowled by Beldam, the ■second and third wicket falling at 8. Nobla and Armstrong were then associated, and stemmed the tide. Fifty appeared jn forty^ive minutes, and the total was taken to 119 before a separation was effected. Armstrong gave a fine display of hard driving, knocking up his score in fifty minutes. His score included six tourers. -He gave a chance when he had made 5. Noble and Darling carried the total to 135, when heavy rain set in, and play was abandoned for the day.
