,» EARL OF MORLEY. [i'BESa /S3OCIATION.I (Received February 28, 8.30 a.m.) LONDON, 271h February. The death is announced of tlio Karl of Morley. [The deceased was born at Kent House, Knightsbridge, on the 11th Juno, 1843, and educated at Eton and at Bsdltol College, Oxford, whore ho took a first-class in Classics in 1865. Ho succeeded to the title in 1864, and was Lord-in-Waiting-to the late Queen Victoria from 1868 to 1874. Ho was Under-Secrotary of State for War in Mr. Gladstone's Government from 1880-86, Privy Councillor, 1886, and on the formation of the now Cabinet in February, 1886, becamo First Commissioner of Works, but resigned in April through a disagreement on Mr. Glad--stone's Homo Rule Bill. Ho was elected Chairman of Committees of the House of Lords in 1889. In 1876 tho Earl of Morley married Emily, the second daughter of the late Mr. Leopold Reiss. His heir is Viscount Boringdon.] SIB WEMYSS REID. LONDON, 27th February. Sir Thomas Wemyss Reid is dead. [As a writer, Sir Wemyss Reid mado a great reputation for himself. Ho was born at Newcastle-on-Tyne in 1842, and becunio a journalist in 1861. Three yen id later lib was appointed editor of tho Preston Guardian, and in 1870 editor of the Leeds Mercury. Kir Wemyss contributed largely to the leading reviews and magazines. He is tho author of "Charlotte Bronte: A Monograph," a biographical work intended to supplement Sire. Gaakell's well-known "Life of the Author of 'Jane Eyre.' " In 1883 he published "Gladys Fane, a Story of Two Lives." Two years luter, at Christmas, 1885, appeared "Maulovcrer's Millions," a sensational story, the scene of which was laid in Yorkshire. In 1888 ho published the "Life of tho Right Hon. W. E. Forster," a work tracing tho personal lristory of the author of the Education Act. Tho other works written by the deceased are "Cabinet Portraits," "Politicians of To-day" (1879), and "The Land of tho Bey," He also occupied the position of editor of the Speaker from its foundation until October, 1899. [In 1902 Sir Mnrtin Gossolin was appointed British Minister at Lisbon— a, position which he wns ocupying at tho time of his death. Prior to that ho was Under-Secretnry of tho Foreign Ollicc. lie was decorated for services its British Commissioner at the Niger Conference hold at Paris in 1898. Tho deceased was 58 years of age.]
