A telegram has been received from the commander of the Pylades stating that he searched Torres Straits and failed to find any trace of the Russian ships which were reported to be off Thursday Island. He is continuing the search. The Congregational Union carried a resolution urging the Government to carry out the Birth Rate Commission's report as speedil yas possible. The northern coal trade is in a bad state. According to the Scretary of the Proprietors' Union, eight collieries are actually closed, five are practically closed, and five are working half-time, while only four are working full time. HOBART, This Day. The conference between the two Houses of Parliament regarding the Governor's Salary Bill has proved abortive. The Assembly desires to fix his salary *at £2000 and the Council at £2750.
