OLD-AGE PENSIONS. SOUND FINANCIAL POSITION OF THE STATE.
(Received, October 12, 9.23 a.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day. In Bis Budget speech Mr. Bent stated that the cost of old-age pensions was generally lessening, but the reduction did not result from any want of sympathy being chowa with the deserving class of pensioners. The general policy of the Government, the Premier continued, would be on the same careful lines as during the past year. He contended that his figures were eminently satisfactory, and challenged comparison with New Zealand or any other borrowing country. "We say to our bondholders," Mr, Bent went on, "Your money is well placed and the security excellent. Look that you place these securities in th« pride of place on the list of quotations that our foresight and prosperity demand."
