CHABITABLE AID BATES.
[BT TKIEGUtAPH— PBESS ASSOCIATION.] DUNEDIN, 11th October. Complaint is made by the Bruce County Council of the large amount to be paid out of rates for charitable aid, while the amount granted in relief by the Benevolent Trustees in the district is not one half the amount paid. It was decided to press for a return of the amount each local district receives in outdoor relief or otherwise. The trustees contend that as all cases tend to drift to Dunedin, such, a return would be misleading. A farmer might have his land mortgaged to full value, but, he had to pay the full oharitoble rate, while persons in the town having largfl salaries did not pay anything. Settlers had to feed the swaggers who went about the cduatry, and when these men came to town they went to the benevolent trustees for relief and the country settler tad to pay the bulk of the money. Then the country had to pay for tenements in the city to benefit town landlords. Other counties are to be asked to assist in getting returns of the assistance given to each district.
