FIRES.
[bt TEtEOßArn— rnKss assoctatiov.} NAPIER, Bth September. T,\vo five-roomed houses on tho Ma-rino-parado, ono owned by Mrs. T. Hyde, of Woodvillo, and the other by Mr. J. Griffin, and occupied by Messrs. D. Cameron and C. W. Fordo respectively, Were destroyed by firo this evening. The fire, which started in Forde's houso, was occasioned by a cat jumping jftpon a table and overturning a lamp. Tlie houso occupied by Fordo was insured for £300, and bho contents for £100. Camoron's furniture was not insured. It is not known whother there was any insHranco of Mrs. Hyde's house. DUNEDIN, Bth September. , A foor-roomed houso in South Dunodin, owned by Mra. A. A. Adams, and tenanted by John Prydo, was destroyed by firo. Iho house was insured in the Alliance Office for £125. Tho tenant had a policy in the United for £100. AUCKLAND, Bth Septombor. The Foresters' Hall, at Birkenhead, was burneu down to-night. Mr. John Stacey's residence of five rooms at Seatoun was burned down between 2 and 3 o'clock" this morning. Mr. Stacey waa awakened by the smell of smoke, and on getting up found the house in flames. He and his wife escaped in their night apparel. The neighbours did all in their power to subdue the fire; but as there waa very little water available, and the fiamee had obtained a firm hold, their effort* were futile. The contents of tho house wero also destroyed. The firo is supposed to Imva^origiiMted in the kitchen. The house was insured for £200 with tho Liverpool, London, and Globe Company, which also had a risk of £50 on the furniture.
