A WSARF LUMPER IMPRISONED. A wharf labourer named Walter Powell this . morning pleaded guilty before Dr. A. M'Arthur, S.M., to three charges of theft of goods, valued at £3 13s, from two of the Shaw Savill and Albion Company's vessels. Chief Detective M'Grath ~"Btiid accused was employed discharging cargo from the Athenic about 20th of this month. Tbo officers of tho vessel had reason to believe that pilfering was coing on, and they got the detectives to keep a watch over the work of the lumpers, with tho result that accused was seen to break open a case and steal three pairs of boots and a child's silk dress. His lodgings wero then soarched, and other articles found which he admitted having stolen when unloading tho lonic. Shipping- companies and business people woro robbed to a great extent by pilfering, which was a class of offence that should be seriously punished. Large quantities of valuable property had co be left iv the hands of lumpers, some j of whom would continue to thiove unless protection wns given by making tho consequences of these offences serious. Accused was a single man, and not in want. His Worship said tho offence was a very serious one indeed, and sent accused to gaol fo» six months.
