STEADILY ADVANCING.
(POSITION OCCUPIED AND TWO FORTS DESTROYED. BUILDINGS DAMAGED.
(Received August 25, 8.57 a.m.) LONDON, 23rd August. A junk which has arrived at Chefoo roporta that the Japanese occupied Itshun, another fort haJ-a-mUo south-west of Port Arthur, and destroyed two forts at Chaochao within the oastcrn lino of fortifications. It is also stated that there is scarcely a building left undamaged at Port Arthur. The Town Hall and ono magoaino have been damaged. Four largo warships have also been damaged in the harbour. Though Russian accounts from Port Arthur allege that the Japanese troops are immolating themselves by thousands, tho goneral drift of tho news shows that tho attacking party is gaining ground. Tho Russians describe the repulse of the Japanese ou the 30th at tho bayonet's point as another Shipka Pass. Admiral Kaiaoka report* that tho Sevastopol, whilo leaving Port Arthur (? roadway) yesterday, struck a mine and had to bo towod back with a list to starboard. Suo wait bombarding the Japanese land positions from the outsido harbour at the timo. « [Shipka Pass became famous during the war between Turkey and Russia in 1877-88. Tho Pass was desperately, but on the whole unsuccessfully, assailed by tho Turks under Suleiman Pasha, with great slaughter on both sides.]
