FOOTBALL. OTAGO DEFEATS SOUTHLAND.

INVERCARGILL, 21th August. The interproviucinl match' OUigo v. Southland was won by tho former, who put the best team in thu field, fore and aft. Showers during the day made tho ground soit, but not s.oppy, and tho weather was fair. During the game tho Olago forwiaida played well togethor, and took possession of tho ball three times out of four in scrums. Notwithstanding they played a wing forward, Who was responsible for smothering Southland's backs. Stead, particularly, was well watched and severely handiod, ' but ho played a greet saving game. Murphy's try was duo to a brilliant run by Stead. Dobson's two trios were well earned, and duo to strong running. His play was much admired. Otago won by nine points (three s tries) to Southland's eight points (a goul and try)/ The visitors' score would have been cloven, but the kicker handled the ball a second timo, and this fine point reduced the lead to a baro margin. Mr. R. Galbraith was referee, but eariy in the gamo ricked a tendon in his leg and had to give way to Mr. M'Grath. Dobson scored two trios for Otago in tho first spell, Bennett securing the other in the second. Jenkins got Southland's try, which Reid converted from a difficult angle. As a result of tho trial gamo held on tho Athletic Park yesterday afternoon *ho following team has been selected to represent the Wodnosday Clubs in thoir aiwiual match against the Wairarapa Thursday Union : — FuH back, E. Read (Oriental) ; three-quarters, Ritchie (Star), Whelan (Southern), Evison (Oriental) ; five-eighth, Luxford (Southern) ; half, Vivian (Petone). Forwards — Front row, F. Read (Star), Morrison (Petone) ; second row, M'Gill (Petone), Hornig (OrianUl); back row, Urwin (Qriontal), Sampson (Oriental) ; wings, Sinclair (Oriental), Kelly (Oriental). Emergencies— . Buck, Thompson (Petone) ; forwards, Simpson (Petone), Mouatt (Star). A match was played yesterday between teams representing Te Aro House and tho Economic, the Tatter winning by 14 points to 10. For the winners tries wero secured by Clarke, Se»rio, Bartlett, and Hudson, ono being converted. Pykp and A. Smith scored for To Aro House, Pyko converting both trios. Mr. .oannehr was referee. Tho following will represent tho Wadrarapa junior representatives in tho match against tho Wellington juniors on Saturday : — Dennett, Udy, Groubc, Thompson, Wadham, Mullins, Moana, Norman, Hastings, Johnson, Ahipeno, Mason, Baghurst, Hendorson ; emergency, G.
