Tho Saddlers' Unipn, hnving wuited upon Mr. Witheford, M.H.R., m regard to the importation of military requisites, Air. Withoford sent tho following telegram to the Defence Minister: — "Auckland Saddlers 1 Union expresses regret that eight thousand pouches have been imported when such order would gladly have' been exeexitcd by saddlers in tho colony. Can future ordors bo given to coluninl tradesmen?" Tho following reply has been received from Mr. Scddon :—"I: — "I unv at all times desirous of placing any orders for goods wanted with colonial manufacturers, but when the prices are unreasonably beyond what we cun get the same goods for from tho Mother Country, then, as a matter of economy and good goTernment, the Government i» forced, much against its will, to send tho order Homo. Tho pouches ordered aro only an instalment of what is required, and I should be only too happy, within leasonable limits, to place orders within tho colony. The matter enliroly rcsta with manufacturers hero."
