DWELLINGS CONDEMNED.
[BY TELEGRAPH — FItESS ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND, 28th January. Dr. Makgill, District Health Officer, has reported to the City Council, condemning a large number of small dwellings oi the poorer classes in the city as unfit for habitation, both in regard to the ruinous state of tlie buildings and the insanitary nature of tho yards und general surroundings. He suggests that ns far us possible the Council take steps to get rid of the dwellings and acquire some of the "degraded dena" under the Municipal Corporations Act, and erect model cpttagea of from four to six rooms to be jqt at rentals of from four to eight shillings. Till somo such provision is made for the poorest class, Dr. Makgill says the question of improvement cannot be fairly tackled. (For continuation or New* tee page 7. )
