NEW PLYMOUTH HARBOUR.
A PROTEST FROM WAITARA. (Br Telegbaph. ) (From a Correspondent.) WAITARA, This Day. At a public meeting held here last evening to 'protest against a further harbour rate the following resolutions were carried : " That this meeting emphatically protests against any further rating powers being granted to the New Plymouth Harbour .Board on the following grounds — First, that the existing rate is already a great burden to settlers, and the benefit to be derived from the proposed extension of the harbour would be of a very doubtful character, as the accommodation for oceangoing vessels by the proposed expenditure is decidedly experimental, and from experiences of .similar undertakings in other parts of the colony not likely to be accomplished ; second, that in view of the desperate condition of this district for want of roads, it would be a gross injustice to burden the settlers with more rates for speculative harbour purposes, when they can hardly bear the vast expenditure that is now required to give them a bare access to their homes." Copies of the resolution are to be forwarded to --'all members of the House, with a special request to the Taranaki members to oppose the Bill when brought before th& House,
