A deputation, headed by the Mayor of Christchurch, waited on the Premier yesterday, and asked him to assist in getting Colonel Turretiui, the famous engineer, to visit the colony and report with regard to utilising water power in various parts of the colony. Special mention was made of the Waimakariri River, which the City Council intends to utilise if a favourable report is received from a man with a high reputation. The Premier eaid the question should be looked on from a national point of view. Power for water, lighting, transit, and similar purpoHes should be in the' hands of the people. He watt prepared to submit to the Cabinet a. proposal to bring out experts from Ku-itzerlaiid or America to furnish reports in the direction desired. Another deputation, contusing of farmers and others interested in the, frozen meat trade, waited on the Premier, and asked that Komcthing should be done in regard to placing the frozen meat trade on a better footing no far uu distribution at Home was concerned. The Premier urged that the Chambers | of Commerce in the co)any should communicate with Kinnikr bodies in the Old Country, and make arrangements for introducing New Ztaiamf meat to the masses of people in the provinces. There should be better means of distribution, and consignment* xbuuld be vent to Manchester, Liverpool, Hull, Cardiff, and other parts. It wa* uaelcba to place settlers on the land and reduce railway freights if steps were nofc taken to sesure a wider ran^e of market. Parliament had given assistance with regard to South Africa, and he thought that to be consistent it would do something in* the United Kingdom. There should be steamers going to the different ports at' Home. He thought the Government would jdo what it ceold to ensure wider distribution. _ «*
