I* A catastrophe on the Government rail- :" way line was narrowly averted this > morning. V When the excursion train from Wanga0 mii and the Main Trunk line reached Halcoinbe at 26 minutes past 9, it is stated that the points were not locked. • The engine over-ran them, and ploughed up the railway yard for about twenty yards. The firsb covered-in truck was upset, c and the second was driven on top of it. o There were nearly 3000 passengers on .- the train. o Several people in the two tracks were - badly bruised, bub none -were seriously a injured. Medical aid was sent from Feilding immediately. Had it not been for the Westinghouse brake the accident would have had disT astrous results. g The excursionists came on to Palmersf ton by the next train, being delayed only some twenty minutes at Halcombe.
