THE NEED FOR A STRONG NAVY. [rRESS ASSOCIATION.! NEW YORK, 13th November. At the banquet of the New York Chamber of Commerce" President Roosevelt declared that a strong navy was imperative to enable America to enforce her repugnance to wrongdoing and to become a powerful factor in supporting the peace of th'e world. (Received November 13, 9.34 a.m.) NEW YORK, 12th November. Besides the warships cabled on 29th April last — two battleships of 16,000 tous each, and two, armoured cruisers each of 14,000 tons — the American Board of Naval Construction recommends two gun- ! boats of the Marietta type. [The 'Marietta is of 1000 tons and 1054 horse-power, steaming 13.2 knots an hour. She carries fourteen guns of various sizes, and has a crew of 140 all told.]
