(Received August 11, 8.31 a.m.) LONDON, 10th August. - The body of General Lucas Meyer ha* been embalmed. The funeral will take place after General Botha's arrival. Mr. Reitz, jun., has arrived at Naples In the course of an interview, he declared that the Boers were beaten, not by the soldiers, but by abject misery. He said there would pc war again within three or four years. Many of the young Boers would emigrate rather tllan submit. Many of them were going to Madagascar. EXORBITANT HOUSE-RENTS AT JOHANNESBURG. LONDON, 9th August The Johannesburg Town Council iM petitioning the Government to grant iiu..hties for housing accommodation. Rents at present absorb 40 per cent, of income. Many persons are encamped on Government land, owing to the difficulties of railway transport. The Governor has been advised that Trooper D. M'Loughlin, of HalsweU, Chnstchurch ,who went tq South Africa with the Seventh Contingent, was dangerously ill at Howick with lung trouble.
