DEFRAUDING THE CUSTOMS

[BT TBLEGBAPH — PEES 3 ASSOCIATION.] WANGANUI, «n,? December. At the Stipendiary Magistrate's Court to-day a man named James M'Ainch was charged with having, at Wanganui, I made a false declaration purporting to be a declaration of the value of goods imported by him into the colony. The evidence tendered was to the effect that on 2nd October a parcel containing opal rings and a brooch came by post addressed to defendant, who called himself an opal merchant. The invoice for the goods was £17. The Customs Department, being suspicious that the value of the goods was understated, had the same valued, with the result that the cost price was found to be about £35. The goods were seized, and the man was charged with attempting to defraud the Customs. A fine of £100 was imposed.
