Mr. De Costa, Secretary of the New Zealand Rugby Union, has been informed by Lord Ranfurly of his wish to present a challenge cup to be competed for by New Zealand representative teams. Lord Ranfurly's idea is that the champion fifteen o£ the South Island should meet the orth Island "crack" fifteen at Wellington, and decide which shall hold the trophy. There will be considerable difficulty in arranging a match of the kind, but the football public will appreciate the interest which trio Governor is showing in the national game. The trophy is the first that has ever been offered to the New Zealand Rugby Union, and a committee meeting will be held next week to discuss the manner of competition. It is likely that the various provincial unions will be asked to offer suggestions. Mr. A. Resteaux, of Dunedin, will be referee in the Auckland- Wellington match at the Athletic Park' on Saturday. The Auckland team is expected to arrive by the Manawatu train to-night.
