THE HON. J. CARROLL ON TROT TING MEETINGS.

CHRISTCHURCH, 9th November. I At the conclusion of the meeting of I the Metropolitan Trotting Club the Hon. J. Qaa-roll was entertainied by the stewards. The 'Chairman eulogised the tact and discrimination displayed by Mr. Carroll during the time he was Colonial Secretary. Mr. Carroll, in the course of a long r,eiply, said tha,t he believed class trotting would place the sport above the suspicion which at present frequently attached to it. The North Island was far behind the South in trotting, but Tie had tried and hoped in tha near future to accomplish considerable improvement. It had be&n said lie had dealt harshly with the North Island clubs, but his sole aim had been to improve and uplift the sport. He believed that if saddle races were eliminated and the1 sport confined! to whj&el events, it would be more interesting.
