« „ 1 SOMETHING ABOUT THE NEW PLANT. The railway carriages which are being manufactured by the American Car Foundry Company in. Si. Louis, United States, for long-distance journeys on the New Zpalard Government lines, will be superior to any now in use in the colony. All of them will" be on what is known as the " bird cage " principle, so familiar lo those who notv travel first-class in New Zftvland, but various improvements are being introduced that avJII make the lot of passengers much more comfortable than at present. The second-class accommodation is io be equal to that now provided for first-class passengers. The first-class cars will be beautifully fitted up. One compartment In, each will be for ladies only, aud in each carriage there are to be two lavatories — one for each sex. Every second-class carriage wils also have a couple of lavatories. Sixtythree cars (all of them three or tfour feet longer than any now running in New Zealand) have .been ordered, and some of theni are expected tg arrive towards Ihe end of the year. Mr. Harris, an officer,, of the New Zealand Railway Department,* is superintending their construction. The Railway Department has been advised that excellent progress is also being made with the building of the powerful ibcomoUves which it has ordered from the Baldwin Works, Philadelphia, for use in various parts of the colony. Twentytwo engines are under order, and the whole of them are to be brought to the colony in a steamer which is expected to arrive in January.
