IN THE EASTERN TRANSVAAL.
LIEUT.- GENERAL FRENCH'S MARCH. LONDON, 27th October. A thousand Boers opposed Lieut.-Gene-ral French's force in its march through the Eastern Transvaal from Carolina to Bethel, about fifty miles south '•of Middelburg, and there was fighting and sniping daily. Lieut. N. L. Calvert, of the Sixth Dragoon Guard's, has been killed near Bethel. (Received October 29, 9.11 a.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day. Lieut. Calvert, lulled at Bethel, in the Transvaal, was a nephew of Mr. George Chirnside, of Wembee, near Melbourne.
