Something like two hours was spent at this week's meeting of the Trades* Council in discussing a. motion to the effect that representations should be made to the Government to amend the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act so as to permit the pai"ties to the dispute nominating members of the Conciliation Boards, two by the employers and two by the Union. Messrs. D. P. Fisher and A. Collins (members of the Conciliation Board), who are delegates on the Council, took part in the discussion, and spoke strongly m favour of the maintaining of the present system. The discussion, was adjourned till next Aveek. There is considerable- pressure on the foundries thioughout the colony owing to the boom in dredging, and several Dredging Companies have been obliged to order their machines in Melbourne, Sydney, aud San Francisco in order to obtain delivery in a reasonable time. On tho West Coast of the South Island a large fleet of dredges will be required and the t building of these machines will afford profitable employment to those capable of undertaking the work. To meet the new conditions it is proposed to establish a foundry on the West- Coabt on a large scale, and for this purpose a company is in process of iormafion, known as the West Coast Foundry Company, with a capital of £25,000" in £1 shares. Such a concern should find plenty of work for years to come, and the venture ought to be profit-earning from the commencement. The full prospectus will be found on another page. With reference to the resolution of the Otago - Dunedin Patriotic Fund Committee,- published elsewhere, ifr. Chisholm, Mayor of Dunedin, telegraphed from Wellington to the Committee to-day as follows : — '•Government determined, and Committees all over colony almost unanimous, in favour of legislation, which they think desirable, and I think inevitable, but Premier proposes that Otago and Southland shall be one of four districts to appoint local trustees to adminster the fui\l, Mayors of Dunedin, Christchurch, Auckland, and Nelson being one" of trustees in their rt&pective districts, tho other trustees to be elected by the various committees representing the contributions in the various districts. I will place committee's resolution before Government, but feel confident they will act as indicated."
