VICTORIA UNIVERSITY COLLEGE.
THE REQUEST FOR THE MOUNT COOK SITE. The conference between the members of the Victoria University College Council and the Parliamentary representatives of the district which the College serves on the question of the College site was held at the Parliamentary Buildings this morning, his Honour the Chief Justice (Sir Robert Stout) in the chair. ! Speeches strongly in favour of the granting of the Mount Cook site were made by the Hons. Dr. Grace, Lieut. - Colonel Pitt, M.L.C.'s ; Messrs. Hogg, Graham, Mills, Hall, Hutcheson, and Atkinson, M.H.R.'s ; and Sir Robert Stout, Mi. C. Wilson, and Dr. Chappie, members of the College Council. The Minister of Education, who was present by invitation, expressed sympathy with the University cause, and undertook to do his upmost to see the College placed upon a proper footing. With regard to the question of site, he was not quite convinced that the Mount Cook one was the most suitable, but he would be only to glad to receive anj- information that any member of the College Council or any others of those present could furnish. Eventually it was resolved unanimously, on the motion of Mi. Hall, M.H.Pv. ior Waipawa, seconded by Mr. C. H. Mills, member for Wairau — "That in the interest of the six provinces most deeply concerned, the Mount Cook &ite should be set aside for the purposes of the University College and a public park." A Committee was appointed, consisting of Messrs. A. R. Guinness, J. Grahem, A. W. Hogg, C. Hall, and C. H. Mills, M.H.R.'s. to confer with the Government for the purpose of carrying out the "foregoing resolution, and obtaining a suitable site for the College.
