THE MINISTER FOR PUBLIC WORKS. [by telegraph— prkss association 1 TIMARU, This Day. The Hon. W. Hall- Jones, Minister for Public Works, addressed a small meeting last night at Sutherlands, a country district which he was unable to reach in his election campaign. He pointed to the prosperous state of the colony, andsketched the chief causes contributing thereto. The public debt was large, but was represented by good assets in public conveniences. He said little about pubiio works, except that the North Island Trunk, Otago Central, and CanterburyBlenheim lines ought to be finished as early a^ possible without any big borrowing. Mr Hall-Jones made appreciative remarks on the part played by the New Zealanders in South Africa. He be--lieved the Premier grasped the whole position at the outset as well as any man in the Empire. Referring to next session he mentioned local government reform, ' amandment for the Land for Settlements Act, continuance of purchase of land, and accident insurance as matters that must come up. The Minister will return to Wellington on Saturday.
