THE NOTORNIS MANTELLI.
[by relegbaph—press association.] Dunedin, This Day. the meeting of the University Counoil to-day, Dr. [Young, of Invercargill, in intimating that the specimen of the Notornis Mantelli sent to the Museum was to remain there permanently, spoke of the rare public spirit manifested by Mr. Ross, the finder. From the first Mr. Ross was aware of the financial importance of the discovery, but he steadily made that consideration subordinate, and regretted that circumstances would not enable him to hand it over to the Museum as a gift. When it was finally offered to the Government for the Museum at £250, Mr. Ross knew that a good offer of £350 was in his (Dr. Young'?) hands, and that another £100 could be got in the open market. However, Mr. Ross insisted on giving the country a chance at the old price, and it was satisfactory that so fine a specimen remained in the colony.
