THE STAR CLUB'S SWIMMING SPORTS.

The Star Boating Club was not favoured with the best of conditions for its swimming sports on Saturday afternoon. A stiff north-west wind churned the water of the harbour into an aggravating jobble, through which the swimmers had to plough their way. Still, it was warm, and the swimmers entered into the sport with a zest, spurred on, mayhap, by bright eyes that looked down upon them from tho boathouse balcony, which was set apart as usual for the fairer half of humankind. Numbers of spectators also watched the races from the adjacent breastwork. Mr. H. D. Bell, President of the club, and Mrs. Bell, were present, and the club's many guests at an appropriate interval took afternoon tea provided by Mr. Mawson. Messrs. Truscott, Rich, and Sherwood, champion swimmers' from Christchurch, put in an appearance during the afternoon, and gave an exhibition of swimming. The officials for the afternoon were : — Messrs. W. H. Morrah, H. J Duigan, and W. D. Home, handicappers; Mr. N. Galbraith, starter; Messrs. G. H. Bethune, C. Pearce, and A. W. Newton, judges ; and st committee consisting of Messrs. G. H. Bethune (captain of the club), C. Pearce (deputy-captain), W. H. Morrah, N. Galbraith, A. W. Newton, W. D. Home, R. Pownall, J. R. Morrison, H. J. Duigan, and H. W. Cooper, and Mr. W. I.
