NEW ZEALAND TEAM v. OTAGO. [BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.]

Dunedin, 28th January. The first appearance in the fyjld of the New Zealand team attracted a largo attendance of spectators to the Carisbrook ground to-day. Before the match against the Otago thirteen commenced it was arranged that the New Zealand team should bat the whole thirteen men while fielding eleven. Heavy tropical rains during the week had soaked the ground, and, in expectation that the wicket would play queerly, Cobcroft, on winning the toss, sent the local men in to bat. As it proved, the wicket, though soft, played easily, and the first few batsmen scored freely, but the Otago team showed a tail of unusual dimensions. Cobcroft gave six bowlers a show, and all but Upham secured wickets. Fisher and Downes opened the attack for New Zealand to Broad and Siedeberg. The latter was cleaned bowled by Fisher, mking way for Geddes. Both batsmen played safely and kept the wickets up till the luncheon adjournment. At 20 a double change of bowling was made, Frankish and Upham taking the ball. The score advanced, steadily till 37 was reached, when Broad tipped a ball into the slips. Austin was the next man. At 40 Fisher resumed bowling vice Upham, who had not got his length. Seven runs later Geddes, avuo had played prettily and confidently, was caught at mid-off, and, with Gooch in, Downes supplanted Frankish. At 56 Austin, who had made '9, was missed at the wickets off Fisher, but, with the score unaltered, Gooch was caught by Upham. When he had made five Wilkie was beaten by a breaking ball, to which he stepped out, Boxshall stumping him. Rattray joined Austin and Ashbolt relieved Fisher, the score being 66. With five runs added Austin was run. out, for the fourth time in representative cricket this season, after having played a good innings of which fine driving was the feature. On Hope going in a demonstration in his favour was made by the spectators. Reese relieved Downes, and in his first over Hope was smartly stumped. In the next over Rattray fared similarly. Boxshall's good work was cordially recognised by the crowd. Butler and Harkness were then together. The latter was missed by Lusk at point from a difficult chance off Ashbolt, but after he had scored five was bowled by the Wellington trundler, and Gough skied the first ball to mid-off. Williams joined Butler, and after the latter had brought the century in view, Frankish and Fisher resumed bowling, the former getting the last two nfen caught off successive balls. Butler took in his bat for a earefuly compiled 23, chiefly resulting from leg glances. The innings, which had opened promisingly, closed at 4 o'clock for 105. Baker and Reese opened the batting for the New Zealand team, to the bowling of Austin and Hopo. The batsmen commenced carefully, Reese scoring the more freely, chiefly by pretty drives. With 20 up^ Baker began to open his shoulders, and a shori*pitched ball from Hope, which he pulled, yielded five, all run. At 26 T. Downes relieved Austin, and in the third over got the left-hander leg before. G. Mills was clean bowled with his second ball. Cobcroft joined Baker, who continued to pay particular attention to Hope. At 48 Harkness went on in place of the left-hander, but a separation was effected from the other end, JSope snapping up a sharp chance in the slips. Lusk, the next man, had only scored a couple when a ball from Downes reached his pads, and an appeal for leg before was answered against the batsman. On "Ike" Mills partnering his captain the play became tediously slow. Geddes eventually relieved Harkness. The change was relished by Cobcroft, but he gave a chance right into the hands of Hope, out of which, however, the ball

spun. Stumps were drawn immediately alter this, lour wickets being down for 64 runs. The scores tuie : — Otago. — First Innings.
