"Oamabu, 28th January Regarding the alleged bumping of the steamer Waikato wlien leaving Oamaru, the pilot had taken the vessel a mile clear of the port, and had left her at a place the chart shows 27 feet of water, deepening as the open sea is made. The Waikato was drawing 18ft 3in, and the rise and fall of the sea would not be more than three feet. The bumping is therefore inexplicable, as the place where it occurred must be at least 1^ or 1$ miles away from the port, with probably 30 feet of water. It is unlikely the Otarama, which arrived at Port Chalmers from London Wednesday morning, will visit Wellington this trip. Her loading for London will be done at southern ports. Mr Eobinson, chief officer of the Wainui, ia to succeed Mr Ward on the Eotoiti ; and Mr Liddell, late of tbe Mapourilca, joins the Wainui. A mob of 400 sheep was shipped to Lyttelton by the Westralia yesterday afternoon. The Corinna will not come to Wellington from Westport this trip. Lyttelton is her next port from Wejitport. , The Waikare, with excursionists from Milford Sound, made the run from Greymouth roadstead to Westport roadstead in 3J hours. The tug Mana went out with a number of townspeople aboard, but the Waikare was too far away to permit of communication. Had the programme allowed, Captain Ewan, harbourmaster, would have been prepared to take her into Westport and berth her at the crane wharf. The Waikare was to be piloted round the Marlborough Sounds by a local fisherman well acquainted with the locality. The Blenheim people have been agitating for an excursion train to Picton to enable them to see the big steamer. The Waikore ariived at Picton at 9.30 this morning, and leaves for Wellington at noon to-morrow. The cool hulk Neptune, belonging to the Union Co., at Auckland, has been disposed by action for £35 to the DatenDort F«rnr fia
