CITY COUNCIL.
The orflihary meeting of the City Council Was held last night. There -were pre sent— The -Mayor (Mr. Blair), Councillors Anderson,' Harc6urt ," Willeston, Baiber, Smith, Lingardj Fraser, M'Gill, J. P. Luke, and Devine. .• An apology was received lor the absence of Councillor Izard. The request of the newly-formed Porters' Union that the Council, should recognise it as a body having authority in matters relating to the porters was considered. Councillor Lingard moved that the letter should be referred to the Inspector of Vehicles, etc. (Mr. Doyle) as to whether the request should be entertained. Councillor Luke said he hoped the Council would not pass the motion. He did not see that the Council should take any cognisance of the Porters' Union, or any oilier union. After some discussion Councillor Lingard withdrew his motion. A letter was read from the residents of Home-street, urging the Council to obtain some of the land there (about to be sold by Harcourt and Co.), in order that the street might be widened. A discussion took place as to the right of the owners of
the hind in question to place buildings upon it. Councillor Harcourt asserted that the vendors had a legal right to give a title to all purchasers of the sections at the sale to erect what houses they liked. Councillor Barbep urged the Council to make an effort to improve the street. Councillor Fraser suggested that the opinion of the City Solicitor should be taken as to the legal position. Councillor Devine asserted that an effort Avas being made to place more than one building on a section. Councillor Smith proposed that the Town Clerk should Write to the auctioneers and the solicitors for the vendors, stating that the Council would strictly adhere to its ldgal rights. This motion was carried. ' . • The resolution passed 'ion : the 21st December last adopting the Building Bylaw Amendment was confirmed. ' The report of the Public Works Committee was adopted as brought down, with the exception of the clause refusing Mr. J. Hear.d leave to erect a residence on his Innd off Mount-street, and recommending that ho be prosecuted for commencing to build without a permit. The matter was deferred until the next meeting of the Public Works Committee, to give Mr. Heard an opportunity of attending;" >"'•?'' Accounts amounting to £4480 14s 3d were passed for payment. On the motion of Councillor Smith, it was resolved that the southern end qf the Reserve it). Cambridge and Kent terraces be reduced by 20ft for street widening purposes. . ., . 1 «, i■ . '
