THE FUTURE OF THE NEW HEBRIDES.

♦ FEANCE'S HOLD OVEE THE GROUP. [PBESS ASSOCIATION.] (Eeoeived December 30, 9.25 a.m.) Sydney, This Day. Mr. John Hisrginson, a gentleman largely interested in mining and commercial schemes in New Caledonia and the New Hebrides, is visiting Sydney. In an interview, he claimed that the trade supremacy in the New Hebrides belongs to the French, as the group is a natural annexe to New Caledonia. Owing to their proximity to her own possessions France would never allow the New Hebrides, which have a great future as an agricultural country, to go. There is, Mr. Higginson continues, no fear of the New Hebrides being used as a French convict settlement. The convict system in New Caledonia is almost obsolete, and in his opinion France, if approached, will be willing to give an undertaking that she will not send any more convicts there.
