TO THE EDITOR. Sir — You have already pointed to the mischievous effects of indiscriminate and unauthorised collection for charitable purposes. I would draw attention to the methods of the Salvation Army. I have been applied to lately on more than one occasion for contributions to the " Selfdenial Fund " by persons who may or may not be authorised to do so, but who produced no credentials from the officers of that organisation, and did not even wear the Army badge. If this sort of thing is encouraged or even permitted by the leaders of the Salvation Army it certainly is, to say the least of it, ill-advised ; and if it is not, it is high time 1 that public attention is drawn to the fact. Girls and boys going round (apparently "on their own") collecting sixpences and shillings suggest to the sceptical motives the reverse of selfdenial. I am, &c, Caution. Wellington, 20th September,
