CABLE NEWS. [BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.- COPYRIGHT.] THE LATE SIR GEORGE GREY.

[PBKSS ASSOCIATION, j London. 24th September. Lord Selborne (Parliamentary Secretary of the Colonial Oilice), writing to the Dean of St. Paul's, eulogised the late Sir George Grey's genius for administration, the nobility of his character, and his purity of purpose. The Agents-General of the colonies with which Sir George has been connected — viz., Sir David Tennant (Cape Colony), Hon. W. P. Reeves (New Zealand), Dr. Cockburn (South Australia), and Hon. E. H. Wittenoom (West Australia) — will officiate as pall-bearers at the funeral. In several of the city churches yesterday reference was made to the late Sir George Grey, and the " Dead March " was played. At Wesley Church the Rev. W. Baumber, speaking of ideals, instanced the late Sir George Grey, who, he said, had dreamed of the condition of the unborn millions. Sir George Grey was great because his ideals were great. They honoured his memory, and the world was richer because he had lived ; but now they thought of hin. as far advanced in State, wearing a truer crown than any which men could weave for him. During the service Mr. R. B. Williams sang " Thou Art Passing Hence, my Brother." The Rev. J. Palerson, preaching at St. John's last night, spoke of Sir George Grey's fine qualities as a man, his great abilities as a statesman, and his admirable capacity for government. No one could come in contact with him without feeling that he was a thorough cultured gentleman, and his name would be remembered and honoured for generations to come. The Rev. W. C. Waters referred to the deceased statesman at St. Peter's yesterday, and also to the deaths of Bishop Jenner and Mr. Rupert Gibson, who died in Auckland last week from the effects of an accident, and who had formerly been a member of St. Peter's choir. . The flag at Government House was at half-mast to-day as a mark of respect to the memory of the late Sir George Grey.
