[press association^ Auckland, 23rd September. H.M.S. Royalist arrived to-day from Tahiti, having on board a man condemned to death for a murder at Pitcairn Island, who is to be taken to Fiji to be executed there. H.M.S. Tauranga brings up Mr. F. J. Moss, ex-British Resident at Raro tonga, to Auckland, via Tonga. Mrs. Moss and family arrived by the Ovalau. This Day. In connection with the installation of Colonel Gudgeon as the new British Resident at Rarotonga, a correspondent states that the Governor's proclamation has been received with very great disfavour. It is addressed to no one, and signed by no one. The Federal Court Bill would never have been opposed in the way it was had Mr. Moss told Parliament it had come from the Queen. Christchurch, This Day. The spring show of the Canterbury Horticultural Society was opened yesterday, and is the finest ever held in Christchurch, if not in New Zealand. The principle prizes went to Christchurch growers. Mr. F. Cooper, of Wellington, sent a collection of narcissi, which suffered in transit. Timaru, This Day. The death is announced of the Rev. George Foster, the first resident Anglican minister in Timaru. He was first curate and then incumbent of St. Mary's from 1860 to 1875. Since the latter date he has been farming.
