NOTES.

H. Franks, who took charge of the Hon. H. Mosstnan's horses a few months ago, after being associated for 11 years with the Yaldhnrst stable, presided over by his brother-in-law, R. J. Mason, had his first winning- turn at the Avondale Meeting, pulling off two events by the aid of the Auckland Cup winner Antares. Thia is a good start for a young trainer, and shows he knows his business. After several disappointments on the flat, Antares was put over the small sticks to ' endeavour to get some of his purchase ' money back, and he succeeded in the two i hurdle events in which he competed, carrying 1 2st on the second day. The opposition, however, was weak, Reindeer running second on the first, and Atalanta on the second, attempt. Mies Delaval, the winner of the two-year-old race at Avondale on Saturday, is a daughter of Mr. Morrin's new English purchase Seaton Delaval, out of Campania, and it speaks well for the English sire's success at the stud to have the honour of siring the winner of the first two-year-old races of the season, and also the first of hie [ progeny to race proving successful. I hear ( that the filly's success was anticipated, for < a commission in her favour was executed all over tho colony. She is owned by Mr. D. McLeod, of Auckland. Another Seaton Delaval youngster in Hastings, from Liquidation, was also heavily backed for the race in question, but failed to stay out tho distance. He, however, won easily on the second day with Miss .Delaval out of the way. The colt is an inmate of G. Wright's stable.
