RARATONGA'S NEW RESIDENT. COL. GUDGEON'S RECEPTION.
[by telegraph — press association.] Auckland, This Day. News by the Ovalau, which has arrived from the Islands, slates that Col. Gudgeon, the new British Resident at Raratonga, arrived there on the 12tb, and was presented with au address of welcome by Queen Makea. He was installed on the 14th in front of the palace. A file of 50 marines from 1-I.M.S. Tauranga and 500 or 600 natives v ere present, the latter loaded with hauanas, cocoanuts, &c, to be presented to the warship. Captain Brown, with Colonel Gudgeon and Mr. Moss (the late Resident) stood in front of the steps of the palace, from which was road the proclamation expressing Her "M.-.jest.v's displeasure at the refusal of the R u-.-iiongans to obey the Federal Court, and ilii' ingratitude of their treatment of Mr. Moss, hlio had done so much for them. He .<Us c\\i.n~wed the hope th\t Colonel Gudgeon would receive more confidence and support, and Unit the natives would not listen to unntithori'ied persons, who only wished to make nibchief and estrange, the people of the Cook J-lrinrK Cheers for the Queen and a salute 1 olio wed. A message from Lord Ranfurly was also re id, sotting out, Colonel Gudgeon's appoiutim>ut, and qualifications. Colonel Gudgeon .•-hook hands with many of the residents. Tiie visitors dined with Queen Makea. The correspondent of the Auckland Star thinks the new ltesident will be liked and respected by everyone.
