The Union wanted preference giveu to unionists, hut the Court declined to accede to the request. An information has been laid, it is stated, against a resident in the islaud of Kawau for alleged sly grog-selling. New Plymouth, This Day. In the Police Court this morning William Poreman was fined £5, with costs. £2 4s, for exposing a, diseased cow for sale. The charge was laid on the information of Mr. W. Orhell, Siock Inspector. The directors of the Waitara Freezing "Works have decided to sell the works 'to a syndicate £300, which represents the liability of the company to the guarantor?-, aud small accounts. The shareholders forego all . the share money invested. The. syndicate proposes to float a ompau3 r with a capital of £20,000 in £100 shares, and to re-open the works with new machinery and additional buildings. Christchurch, This Day. About 300 C3 r elists took part in the opening of the cycling season yesterday. The annual hill-climbing competition was won by A. Holmes, last year's champion, W. Clarkson being second and J. Grant third, j Timaru, This Day. In the Morrison will case, the defence consisted (1) of denials hy everyone who had access to the deceased's safe that they had j destroyed a will or ever even seen it ; (2) of suggestions of reasons why the- testator should have himself destroyed it, and that he had had opportunity for doing so secretly.
