[PRESS ASSOCIATION.] New Plymouth, 21st July. The petroleum bore has now reached a depth of 987 ft, and the water seems effectually shut off. There are strong indications of oil and gas. Drilliug is proceeding day and night. The electric light is working splendidly. Auckland. 21st July The office of Mr. R. O. Clark, Customsj street, was entered by burglars, and a safe w ith a few pounds in it was removed. The safe ,s supposed to have been taken away in a boat, as the office is quite near the water. j Charles Clarke, licensee of the Victoria Hotel, for employing a woman in the bar after 11 p.m., was fiued £3 and costs. The Minister for Public Works leaves to-morrow for Poroa-tarao tunnel, King Country, to inspect the North Island Trunk Railway works. A deputation representing the Australasian Institute of Marine Engineers waited upon the Hon, Mr. Hall-Jones and urged the necessity of only competent mechanics being allowed to have charge of vessels with auxiliary oil engines, which they urged were to a certain extent dangerous and required careful attehtion, and were a source of great danger to inexperienced men. The Minister said he would take every care that only competent men were employed — competent mechanics who had passed a high examination. This Day. The option for the flotation of the Kurunui property iv the London market has been extended to 31st October. It is anticipated tb;it the company will be successfully floated within the time allotted. Nelson, 21st, July. The Supreme Court opened to-day, before Mr. Justice Edwards. Catherine Mary Satherby of Motueka, was admitted to twelve months' probation, having pleaded Guilty to concealment of birth. A charge of perjury against Amos Taylor, a miner, of Collingwood, is proceeding. Dunedin, This Day. Chief Detective O'Connor has resigned from the Police Force owing to ill-health.
