SIR JOHN BUCKNILL. London, 21st June

Sir John Charles Bucknill, the eminent medico, and originator of the volunteer movement, is dead. [Sir Johq Charles Bucknil], M.D. Lond., F.tt.C.P. Lond., F.R.S., was bom in 1817. at .Market Bosworth. The foundations of his medical knowledge were laid at University College, London, of which he was a Fellow and Member of Couucil. Iv 1840 he graduated with honours in the University of Louden, being first iv surgery and third in mediciue. He was at various periods Censor, Councillor, and Lumleiau Lecturer at the College of Physicians of London. Ilia special subject was insanity,* with its kindred pathological conditions. He served as first Medical Superintendent of the Devon County Lunatic Asylum, aud also as Lord Chancellor's Medical Visitor of Lunatics. He was the founder of the Journal of Mental Science, and for the first nine years (1853 to 1562) its editor He was also one of the original editors of Braiu. He published many works, treating mostly of lunacy and psychological medicine, besides numerous pampnlets and articles. He was an enthusiastic volunteer, and through the influence of the late Lord Fortescue obtained, permission for the embodiment of the Ist Devon and Exeter Volunteer Rifles, and ho was himself the first recruit of this first regiment of the new volunteer movement. Dr Buckpill was knighted iv 1894.
