PROSPECTS OF THE ELECTIVE EXECUTIVE.

Tho prospects of the Elective Executive Appear to have received a check by the results of the recent elections. During the past three years the system has steadily grown in favour with members, and the second reading of the Elective Executive Bill last session, although opposed by almost every member of the Government, was carried on the casting vote of Mr. Speaker. The voting on that occasion was 23 on either side, 18 pairing — nine each wa)-. Out of the 82 members who tlnis expressed themselves favourable to the measure, 13 have now been relegated to political oblivion, ■while only eight of 'the opponents of the Bill have not been returned. Glancing through the list of new members who have , taken the places of those not returned, a substantial majority seems to have expressed disapproval of the Elective Executive sj-stem. so that its chances [of success are now much less than last session.
