NEWS IN BRIEF. INTERPROVINCIAL.

Of the nine persons charged at the Dunedin criminal sessions of the Supreme Court seven were natives of New Zealand. Never before, in Dunedin, has there been anything like such a representation by the colony in this undesirable connection. A child which was playing in a paddock at Havelock the other evening 1 was rushed by a cow. The mother, Mrs. Simmonds, ran to the rescue, and succeeded in diverting the cow's attention to herself. The animal knocked her down, broke her wrist, and gored her severely about the arms and body, but her plucky action saved the child from injury. A movement is on foot among the West Const bands to organise a band contest to be held in Greymouth early in March. A prize of £30 will be offered. A woman in Oamaru, 60 years of age, and the mother of 21 children, rides a bicycle — has ridden 100 miles in a day, and altogether reckons that she has covered 5000 miles. Major Franklyn declared that he would rather be drowned than retire from the Motueka contest. It is said that the small birds in the Gore district are attacking the ryegrass, which they have not been known to do before. "We believe that the people have cut their wisdom teeth, and we believe that- beer barrels and paid lecturers, such as have recently visited our city, will not be allowed to throw dust in the eyes of the people." — Mixed metaphor at a Dunedin Prohibition meeting. Fruit promises to he very scarce this season in the Cromwell district. The orops in Central Otago are said to be suffering severely from want of rain. • ,
