Mr. Ealaton, solioitor, has recovered .£3500 damages for injuries received in the Redfern aooident. His claim was for .£12,000. The proapeotns of a new morning paper, with a capital of .£IOO,OOO, has been issued. The ohief plank in its polioy is the federal union of the colonies. A contraot has beon let locally for the ereotion of the Australian Smelting Company's works at lUawarra, inolnding railway and harbour works. Their total oost will be £200,000, and they are to be completed by December. 18S7. The bush fires spread to the oane-fields in the Biohmond Biver distriot, and a large area has been destroyed. In the Kempsey distriot several houses and barns have been burned. The Attorney-General announoed that if further prosecutions against " tote " shops became necessary, the offenders will be charged under a section of the law necessitating committal for trial. Owing to the continued drought and the soaroity of feed and water, large numbers of stook are dying. Bofe, the solioitor charged with complicity in the butter conspiracy oase, has been committed for trial. Chief Justice Way, of South Australia, presided at a large and enthusiastic meeting in the interests of Mothodist Union. The speakers strongly advooated union. Brisbane, This Day. At the annual meeting of the Victorian Allianoe for the Suppression of the Liquor Traffic, resolutions were passed protesting against compensation to publicans, the granting of grorers' licenses, and the employment of barmaids.
